FISH
HABITAT

FSIN is committed to upholding Treaty rights, including the right to fish, and supporting First Nations in land and water stewardship, specifically concerning fish and fish habitat. However, due to limited resources and technical support, First Nations in Saskatchewan face challenges in effectively participating in fish habitat protection and reviewing Duty to Consult-related materials. To address these challenges, FSIN sought funding from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to review and provide feedback on key documents related to fish conservation and habitat protection. These documents cover a range of topics such as the Draft Framework for Aquatic Species at Risk Conservation, Draft Policy for Offset Measures to Fish and Fish Habitat, Draft Guidelines for Fish Habitat Banks, and draft Interim Standards and Codes of Practice. Through three workshops held in 2023 and 2024, FSIN engaged with First Nations to gather input on these documents. The outcomes of these engagements are summarized in two reports—one focusing on the Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program and the other on Aquatic Species at Risk documents.
