FIRST NATIONS CLIMATE LEADERSHIP
AGENDA

Canada has committed to co-developing an Indigenous Climate Leadership Agenda (ICLA) as outlined in the UN Declaration Act (UNDA) Action Plan, Strengthened Climate Plan, the 2030 Emission Reduction Plan, and Budget 2022.

PROCESS

FSIN has been directed to participate in this program and create opportunities for First Nations in Saskatchewan to contribute to what will become the First Nations Climate Leadership Agenda. FSIN is one of roughly 30 First Nation Representative Organizations leading this work across Canada. Together all regional leads sit on a National Steering Committee and meet quarterly to influence the overall trajectory of this Initiative. File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council as well as Whitecap Dakota First Nation are also partners in this Initiative.

With regard to process and timeline, beginning in 2023 until summer of 2024, FSIN will be gathering and engaging with First Nations from across the region. The Lands and Resources Secretariat will be compiling the recommendations on an ongoing basis. In the summer of 2024, we will be hosting an online engagement where First Nations can review the compiled recommendations and verify their accuracy. Following this, recommendations will be vetted by FSIN. And following this, FSIN will share these recommendations with Canada.

In addition to holding engagements specific to this initiative, we are attending related gatherings to provide updates on the project, invite those in attendance to participate in upcoming engagements, and gather concerns and recommendations.
