(Treaty 6 Territory, Saskatoon, SK) – The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) Executive extends a warm welcome to Prime Minister’s Mark Carney’s newly appointed cabinet sworn in today at Rideau Hall, with particular recognition of the the new Indigenous representation in key ministerial positions.
The FSIN welcomes Rebecca Alty, Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories, to her new role as Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations. As the former mayor of Yellowknife, Minister Alty brings valuable northern perspective and experience working with Indigenous communities to this critical portfolio.
We also extend our congratulations to Mandy Gull-Masty, MP for Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou, on her historic appointment as Minister of Indigenous Services. As the former Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Crees, Minister Gull-Masty makes history as the first Indigenous woman to lead this vital ministry, bringing direct First Nations leadership experience to the role.
"The appointment of these two accomplished women to lead key Indigenous portfolios signals a positive step forward for Prime Minister Carney's government to advancing reconciliation and addressing the priorities of First Nations," said FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron. "We look forward to establishing strong working relationships with both ministers as we collectively work to address the needs of our communities."
The FSIN would like to acknowledge the contributions of outgoing ministers Gary Anandasangaree and Patty Hajdu, who previously held these portfolios. We wish them well in their new responsibilities within government. The FSIN is also pleased to announce that King Charles III has been invited to attend the Treaty 6, 150th Anniversary celebrations next year, a significant milestone representing an opportunity to reaffirm the nation-to-nation relationship with the Crown and First Nations.
With the new cabinet now in place, the FSIN looks forward to engaging with Prime Minister Carney's government on pressing issues affecting Saskatchewan First Nations, including Inherent and Treaty Rights implementation, women and gender equality, unlawful transfer of NRTA (Natural Resource Transfer Agreement), economic development, healthcare, education, child welfare, and infrastructure, etc.
We are committed to working in partnership with the federal government to ensure the rights, interests, and wellbeing of our First Nations are respected and advanced.
The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. FSIN is committed to honouring and upholding the spirit and intent of the Treaties and advocating for the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises made more than a century ago.
