Treaty 6 Territory, Saskatoon SK – The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) Chief and Executive salutes Indigenous women on International Women’s Day 2023.
“FSIN Chief and Executive want to celebrate First Nations women for their hard work, nurturing and dedication to our communities. Women are the backbone of our society and hold together our families,” said FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron.
The overarching theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, embracing equity, is a principle lived by at FSIN. Two of the four FSIN vice chiefs are women. The majority of the staff employed at FSIN are women. And throughout the Treaty territories in the province, there are many women who hold the positions of chief of their First Nations and band councillors.
FSIN hosted the Strength of Our Women Gala in December, 2022 at Dakota Dunes. At this time, elders were honoured for their commitment and sacrifices made for the betterment of their communities. The gala was an event to uplift women. Awards were bestowed to women in several categories. They received honours for their strides as entrepreneurs and professionals in several fields. Their commitment to high education, technology and innovation is a shining example to the next generation.
FSIN treasures women as caregivers and life-givers. In Cree, the keeper of the lodge fire is iskwew “woman”. Iskwewak “women” are the givers of life which is why the second root word in iskotew comes from the Cree word for heart.
