Treaty 6 Territory, Saskatoon SK – The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) reaffirms First Nations’ claim to the land and resources in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, a right enshrined in international law in Treaties signed by our ancestors.
FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron says regardless of the 1930s Natural Resources Transfer Agreement and the assumed administrative control of lands and resources, the government with assumed administrative control must recognize the Inherent and Treaty rights of First Nations.
In the spirit of true reconciliation between Canada and First Nations and in accordance with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, Canada should provide equal inclusion of First Nations people and First Nations government in all lands and resources administration and revenue collection and distribution. First Nations, as the owners of the land and resources, have rights to royalties and the economic benefits of lands and resources.
With First Nations' rights to self-governance, royalties and compensation for extracting renewable and non-renewable resources should flow directly to First Nations for resources such as potash, oil, gas and minerals.
QUOTES
“Our ancestors are Treaty people. They signed Treaties to ensure that we would be able to live on the land and prosper. There is no reconciliation without economic reconciliation and inclusion. First Nations are the original stewards of the land, water, animals and resources and are now unfairly being barred from the modern implementation of Treaty rights by the government's narrow view of Treaty and selfish entitlement to the governance of resources,” said FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron.
