(Treaty 6 Territory, Saskatoon, SK) – The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) Executive acknowledges the results of the 2025 federal election and the appointment of Mark Carney as Canada's new Prime Minister.
FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron stated, "We extend well wishes to Prime Minister Carney and the Liberal Party on their win, and while we appreciate the commitments made during the campaign regarding First Nations priorities, we have heard promises before. Our Nations are looking for transformative action, not just words. Our Inherent and Treaty rights are fundamental and form the foundation of who we are as First Nation people."
"The time for incremental change has come and gone," said FSIN Vice Chief David Pratt. "Our communities continue to face crises in Child & Family Services, opioids epidemic, policing, our missing women, girls, 2Spirit and men, water, education, homelessness, and other vital related issues. We must have leadership from this new government that recognizes our Inherent rights to self-determination and provides the necessary resources for our Nations to thrive. The critical areas must be addressed immediately.”
"The true measure of this new government will not be in its words but in its actions," emphasized Chief Cameron. "We are prepared to work in partnership with Prime Minister Carney and his cabinet, but we will also hold them accountable to their commitments to First Nations peoples. We must work quickly and forward to ensure our priorities are met."
The FSIN will seek an early meeting with the Prime Minister and key cabinet ministers to establish a clear framework for collaboration that respects our Inherent and Treaty rights and advances the priorities of Saskatchewan First Nations.
The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. FSIN is committed to honouring and upholding the spirit and intent of the Treaties and advocating for the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises made more than a century ago.
