TREATY 6 TERRITORY, Saskatoon, Sk. The FSIN is pleased to hear a public apology was
made to Zach Whitecloud from ESPN’s Broadcaster, John Anderson, after a tasteless
comment was directed to the young Indigenous player.
On May 8, 2023, ESPN’s Broadcaster John Anderson made a joke about Vegas Knights
Defenceman, Zach Whitecloud, saying “What kind of name is Whitecloud?”, after
Whitecloud scored a goal in the 2nd period of the playoff game against the Vegas Knights
and Oilers.
Whitecloud is an Indigenous role model for many Canadian and American Indigenous and
non-Indigenous youth alike and speaks about the importance of maintaining a healthy
lifestyle and the importance of an education.
Cross cultural sensitivity training is needed in all areas of Sport, Culture and Recreation
that will shed light on the pressures young Indigenous players face daily. It will teach
you to speak with empathy and understanding rather than judgment. We ask you to
treat all our Indigenous players with the same respect as other players in the NHL and in
all other areas of professional sports.
